Featured Album: Dragonette - Galore

Galore the debut album by British/Canadian electropop band Dragonette is finally out in stores and let me tell you it's hot, hot, hot!! The long wait for it was definitely worth it. I had downloaded it in advance and after the first full listen I just had to go out and buy the CD at my local HMV. The album was physically released on September 24th in Europe and Japan, and on September 25th in Canada.

The album contains many of the songs featured on the Dragonette (EP), released independently in 2005 before the band moved to London and signed a deal with Mercury Records. Most of which have been rerecorded and reworked.

New tracks are "Another Day", "Get Lucky", "Black Limousine", "Gold Rush" and "Marvellous".

Notable omissions from the album include the songs "Nemesis", "Sad Eyes", "Titties For Daddy", "Magic Fantastic", "Shock Box" and "Teacher Teacher". "True Believer" is a reworked version of earlier song "Ruthless".

The songs "I Get Around", "True Believer", "Marvellous" and "Competition" all made Popjustice's "Greatest Hits of 2007" list, described as "the most amazing and brilliant pop tunes of 2007."

"I Get Around" was released as a single in April 2007. "Take It Like A Man" was released in July 2007. The third single, "Competition", will be released in October 2007.

Version is the second album by New York-based British DJ, Mark Ronson. Contrary to initial reports that vocals from departed Sugababes Mutya Buena and Siobhán Donaghy were going to be re-recorded by the newest Sugababe Amelle Berrabah, all the original vocals were kept for the compilation.

Featured Album: Mika - Life In Cartoon Motion

Now that I've introduced you to Mika check out his debut album Life In Cartoon Motion. His sound - flamboyant, funky, quirky, grandiose pop - has seen him described as "a one-man Scissor Sisters" and has also drawn comparisons with Freddie Mercury. The album includes the single Grace Kelly, which topped a quarter of a million listens on MySpace in just four months, and when released by digital download on 8th January 2007, it reached No.1 on the UK Singles Chart on 21st January 2007 and still remains at the No.1 slot at the time of writing [February 7th 2007].
Mika - Life In Cartoon Motion, was released in the UK on February 5th 2007, will be released in the US on March 27th 2007.

The UK release includes a bonus track [Ring, Ring], and a hidden track [Over My Shoulder].

Featured Album: Corinne Bailey Rae

It becomes self-evident the moment you hear her sing the very first note on the first track 'Like A Star', that it showcases a slice of sublime Billie Holiday blues delivered with a voice that pins you, in the softest but most persuasive of ways, to the wall; a voice that floats up effortlessly, full of caress, subtlety and the very purest quality. It is wonderful, this voice, and surely a discovery to treasure, but it belongs to a young woman not from somewhere musically exotic, say Mississippi or even Manhattan, but just East of the M1 motorway: Leeds, England.

Her name is Corinne Bailey Rae, and she was born to do this.

Her debut album is sublime, full of tiptoeing delicacy and wraparound warmth, and one that merges the spirit of Billie Holiday with the statuesque soul of Erykah Badu. Even a cursory listen will tell you that its creator is something rather special.

Featured Album: All Saints - Studio 1

On hearing All Saints tremendous comeback single Rock Steady, Cheryl Tweedy of Girls Aloud sniped that it was influenced by the Girls [whose own sound, she failed to add, owed much to the Saints]. Saint Mel Blatt's dry retort - "We could only aspire to be like Girls Aloud" - proved that the reunited 1990s foursome are taking up where they left off six years ago.

Studio 1 offers a fresh take on their girl-group style. Always R&B-inclined, their harmonies are now judiciously seasoned with reggae and ska. Their differences apparently behind them, Blatt, Shaznay Lewis and the Appleton sisters sigh and yearn as one, mostly to delightful effect. The 2Tone-ish Scar overflows with sweetness, but there's sizzling suspicion on the dancehall-pop Hell No, and indignation on the wayward reggae of Too Nasty. These thirty-something mums still got it going on.

All Saints' Studio 1 album was released in the UK on November 13th 2006.

Featured Album: Kylie Minogue - Showgirl: Homecoming Live in Sydney

I've been a big fan of Kylie Minogue since I first heard "Can't Get You Out of my Head" on the radio. Kylie's Showgirl Homecoming Live in Sydney was just released on January 8th and it's a must have for all Kylie fans.

The album was recorded in Sydney on the second night of Kylie's current tour and features songs spanning her entire career. It also features a very special version of 'Kids', where Kylie is joined onstage by old friend Bono, in an appearance which brought the house down.

I can't wait for the DVD!!

Featured Album: Lily Allen - Alright, Still

Alright Still is the debut album from Lily Allen. Taking inspiration from her London surroundings and the music collection of her parents, Allen delivers a mix of ska, punk, hip-hop and rock with a hefty dose of pop.

Possessed of a feisty wit and taste for urban storytelling, these eleven tracks of sunshine-friendly reggae pop cover topics including frustrating potential closing-time suitors [Knock ‘Em Out], being happy when your ex is having a bad time [Smile], and having a little brother who likes a bit of a smoke--and not just of the tobacco variety [Alfie]. Wisely, however, Allen doesn’t let the grittiness of the subject matter tarnish the golden pop suss of the songs, a suite of gleaming productions by names including Mark Ronson and Gwen Stefani collaborator Greg Kurstin that take inspiration from at the lighter end of reggae and vintage rocksteady.

Some of my favourite tracks include Smile, LDN, Everything's Just Wonderful and Alfie.
